Hi
In black water rivers and lagoons sand is natural substrat
.
Leaves are very popular in Poland and many people use then in his SA biotope tank. Leaves are also good for shrimp (good for color). In my tank i use leaves from "buk" (
Fagus sylvatica) and "dąb" (propably
Quercus robur). You can take leaves from tree in winter/spring (february, march) when they dry and "dead"
or also in end of fall when leaves are dry. Put dry leaves in cold water in pot and boil it 5-10min. Leaves can be in tank for 3-6weeks, after that time they "dissolve" and you should replace it (part of them). Be carefull with that because if you use too many leaves in tank your pH could fall down (if your KH is low). I saw that leaves people can buy in warsaw shops but...well, i like spend money for beer
...leaves i can find in forest.
Polish version
: Liście należy zbierać na przełomie lutego i marca z drzew lub z ziemi pod warunkiem, że nie zaczęły gnić. Liście trzeba osuszyć. Suche liście wsadzamy do garnka z zimną wodą a następnie zagotowujemy i gotujemy 5-10minut. Tak spreparowane liście toną w wodzie i nadają się do włożenia do akwarium.

I don't know what kind of wood is that. My friend found it in polish likes year ago. It was one big wood but i cut them for smal pieces.
